One scripture study technique that has deepened my study of the Book of Mormon is likening the scriptures to my life.

You remember that Nephi taught that we should “liken all scriptures unto us that it might be for our profit and learning” (1 Nephi 19:23). Likening the scriptures to our lives helps us bridge the gap between the then and there of the scriptures, and the here and now of daily life.

One thing you can do to liken the scriptures to yourself is to think about experiences you have had that relate to what you read. For example, in Alma 27:27 we read about a group of people who were “perfectly honest.” I could liken the scriptures to my life by thinking about a time when I was perfectly honest. Like when I was 8 or 9, I went to a dinosaur museum. At the end there was a gift shop and I bought this really cool dinosaur wallet.

I purchased the wallet and when the casher gave me the change, I noticed that she had given me one cent too much. I said, “Here you go,” as I returned the penny to her. “You gave me a penny too much.”

She was surprised. “Thank you,” she replied. “You are a very honest young man.” I felt very good that afternoon, and to this day remember the good feeling inside that accompanied honesty.

We can liken the scriptures to our lives simply by pausing to ask, “How can I apply what I am reading to my life?”

Take a moment and think about your scripture study. When has been a time that you have likened the scriptures in your life? If you'd like to share an experience you've had likening the scriptures to your life
